Hookah Bases

The best base is the one that fits your stem — that comes before looks. Check whether your hookah seals with a grommet or screws on (see the replacement question below), then pick by what you want from it.

For everyday sessions, thick clear glass like the Big Maks or Cyril Tradi is the hardest to break and makes it easy to see your water level. For a traditional Egyptian pipe, an Egyptian-style base matches the stem it was made for. If the base is the centerpiece, Bohemian crystal from Egermann or the Regal x Caesar is hand-decorated Czech glass — heavier, pricier, and the kind you keep for years.

Whichever you choose, it needs to seat the stem airtight and hold enough water to cover the downstem by about an inch to an inch and a half.

This is the most critical step for a good hookah setup. The universal rule is to fill the base with enough water to submerge the bottom of the downstem by about 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5-4 cm).

• Too little water will not cool or filter the smoke properly, resulting in a hot, harsh, and unpleasant session.
• Too much water will make the pull (inhale) very difficult and restricted. It can also cause the water to bubble up and get sucked into your hose, flooding it and ruining the session.

While pure, clean water is always recommended, many people like to add other items to their base. Here are the most common additions:

• Ice: This is the most popular addition. Adding ice cubes to the water makes the smoke extra cool and smooth, which can be very refreshing.
• Fruit Slices: Adding things like lemon slices, lime slices, or berries (like cranberries or raspberries) is mostly for aesthetics. It can add a very subtle hint of flavor to the smoke, but it mainly just looks great.
• Fruit Juice: You can mix fruit juice (like cranberry, pineapple, or orange) with your water, typically in a 50/50 ratio. This will add a noticeable flavor to your smoke.

Important: If you use anything besides water (especially juice), you must clean your hookah base and stem thoroughly immediately after your session. The sugars in the juice will spoil, get sticky, and can lead to mold and permanent, unpleasant smells.

Hookah bases come in many shapes and sizes, but they generally fall into these common styles:

Clear glass: The workhorse. Thick-walled clear glass like the Big Maks or Cyril Tradi is the most durable option, shows your water level at a glance, and fits most grommet-style stems. This is what most of our customers run day to day.

Bell and shaped glass: Bases like the Zahra Bohemian Bell or the Big Maks Drop change the silhouette and the water volume — a wider bell holds more water and gives a slightly smoother pull. Pick these for the look as much as the function.

Bohemian crystal: Hand-decorated Czech glass from Egermann or the Regal x Caesar collaboration. Heavier, more expensive, and made to be the centerpiece of a serious setup. These are the bases people buy once.

Traditional Egyptian: Simpler, often colored glass made to pair with hand-welded Egyptian stems like Khalil Mamoon. Right if you want the classic lounge look and your stem was built for it.

Brand-specific screw-on: Modern pipes from brands like Regal, Alpha, and Moze often use a proprietary twist-lock base. These only fit their own stem — see the replacement question below before buying.

A "hookah base replacement" is simply a new base (or vase) that you buy when your original one breaks or when you want to change the look of your hookah.

Buying a replacement is not always simple. Here is what you need to know:

1. Identify your hookah's connection type. There are two main kinds:

• Grommet: This is the traditional style. A rubber or silicone "grommet" creates a pressure seal between the stem and the glass opening.
• Screw-on (or Twist-lock): This is common on many modern hookahs. The stem screws directly onto the base.

1. If you have a GROMMET hookah: You have more flexibility. You need to measure the diameter of the opening on your old base and buy a new "grommet-style" base with a similar opening.
2. If you have a SCREW-ON hookah: These are proprietary. You must buy a replacement base from the exact same brand and model as your hookah. For example, a "Brand X" stem will not screw onto a "Brand Y" base.
