The State of Hookah in America 2026
What 21,700 tins, boxes and packs shipped across thousands of orders between November 2025 and October 2026 say about where America smokes hookah, what it packs in the bowl, and how fast that is changing.
We ship hookah tobacco, coals and gear to every state, and after a year of doing that at volume we had a question nobody in this industry publishes an answer to: who actually buys this stuff, where, and what do they order? So we pulled a year of our own orders, stripped out everything personal, and counted. This is what came out. The numbers are ours alone, not a national survey, but at more than 21,000 items across thousands of orders in every state they are big enough to say something, and some of what they say surprised us.
The short version
- Nevada is the hookah capital of America. Per resident, Nevada orders at four times the national rate, more than three times California's and 4.5 times Texas's.
- Mint wins everything. One product, Tangiers Cane Mint, was 11% of every unit we sold. Mint-forward flavors were about a third of all tobacco.
- Tangiers is the national favorite, but 2026 belongs to the Russian brands. MUSTHAVE went from 5% of monthly units in January to 25% in October.
- Michigan, Oregon and Louisiana are the holdouts where MUSTHAVE already beats Tangiers. South Carolina is the only state that still votes Al Fakher.
- Hookah is a patio-season habit. Orders were 48% higher in August through October than in November through January.
- Nobody buys quick-light coals anymore. Every coal in our top 160 products is natural coconut.
Where America smokes: the per-capita index
Raw volume follows population, so California, Florida, Texas and New York lead the way you would expect. Adjust for population and the map rearranges itself. The index below sets the national average at 100: a state at 200 orders twice as much per resident as the country as a whole.
Las Vegas explains a lot of it: a 24-hour city with one of the densest hookah lounge scenes in the country, and a lot of people who learned the habit at a lounge and then bought a hookah for the house. If you have never been inside one, our primer on what a hookah lounge is covers how that scene works.
The surprises are the Dakotas, Delaware and New Mexico. Small populations make per-capita numbers jumpy, so treat the Dakotas as a strong signal rather than a precise rank, but they are not nothing: those orders are heavily Tangiers, bought in 250-gram quantities, by people a long drive from any lounge. When there is no lounge, you become the lounge.
| Rank (volume) | State | Share of US orders | Per-capita index (US = 100) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | California | 14.1% | 121 |
| 2 | Florida | 9.6% | 139 |
| 3 | Texas | 8.3% | 90 |
| 4 | New York | 8.1% | 138 |
| 5 | Georgia | 4.4% | 132 |
| 6 | Arizona | 4.2% | 187 |
| 7 | Nevada | 3.9% | 405 |
| 8 | New Jersey | 3.4% | 123 |
| 9 | Pennsylvania | 3.1% | 80 |
| 10 | Illinois | 3.0% | 80 |
| 10 | Colorado | 3.0% | 170 |
| 12 | Virginia | 2.7% | 105 |
| 13 | North Carolina | 2.7% | 82 |
| 14 | Massachusetts | 2.4% | 114 |
| 15 | Michigan | 2.0% | 66 |
| 15 | Missouri | 2.0% | 107 |
What America packs: mint, then everything else
We sold roughly 21,700 units across the year. One SKU, Tangiers Cane Mint, was 2,424 of them. Add its siblings (Cane Mint Alpha, Extreme Cane Mint, Cane Mint B) and the Cane Mint family is about 3,190 units, roughly one in every seven things that left the building. No other flavor is within shouting distance; the next non-mint tobacco is MUSTHAVE Pinkman at 419. Cane Mint is also only one of the best Tangiers flavors; Kashmir Peach, Breakfast Cereal and Pineapple all made the top ten products.
Sorting the 160 best-selling products (out of the several hundred hookah flavors we stock) into flavor families, with coals, foil and hardware removed:
| Flavor family | Share of tobacco units | Biggest sellers |
|---|---|---|
| Mint and cooling | 34% | Tangiers Cane Mint, MUSTHAVE Frosty, Fumari Enlighten Mint, Al Fakher Mint |
| Named blends and mixes | 20% | MUSTHAVE Pinkman, Tangiers Static Starlight, Adalya Lady Killer, Love 66 |
| Citrus | 14% | Eternal Smoke Lime Lit, Tangiers Orange Soda, Pink Grapefruit, Strawberry Lemonade |
| Tropical | 9% | Tangiers Pineapple, Coconut, Kashmir Mango, Eternal Smoke Aloha Nights |
| Dessert and drinks | 8% | Tangiers Breakfast Cereal, Horchata, MUSTHAVE Milky Rice, Cookie |
| Melon and peach | 7% | Tangiers Kashmir Peach, Sour Watermelon, Eternal Smoke Watermelon Lit |
| Berry, cherry, grape | 7% | Tangiers Strawberry, Kashmir Cherry, Al Fakher Blueberry, Grape Mint |
Mint being a third of the market is the least surprising number here. It is the flavor people mix everything else with, the flavor lounges default to, and the flavor beginners order because it is the one they already know (we rank the best mint hookah flavors separately, because the category is that big). If you want the long version of which flavors are worth your money, our Flavor Lab keeps a running list of the best hookah flavors based on what customers reorder.
The brand map
Tangiers, the dark-leaf American brand out of San Diego, was 45% of every unit we sold and the number one brand in 37 of the 47 states and districts where we shipped enough to count. In some states it is less a preference than a monopoly.
| Brand | Share of all units | Where it wins biggest |
|---|---|---|
| Tangiers | 45% | Delaware 89%, New Mexico 81%, South Dakota 78%, Minnesota 75%, Kentucky 75%, Nevada 73% |
| MUSTHAVE | 13% | #1 in Oregon (67%), Michigan (47%), Louisiana (31%); biggest by volume in California, New York, Texas |
| Al Fakher | 6% | #1 in South Carolina (54%), Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia |
| Eternal Smoke | 6% | Georgia 21%, Massachusetts 16%, Ohio 16%, Texas 11% |
| Adalya | 4% | Massachusetts 15%, Virginia 9%, Florida 7%; #1 in Wyoming |
| Fumari | 4% | #1 in Washington, DC and Montana; Ohio 18%, North Carolina 6% |
| Darkside | 3% | Michigan 13%, Minnesota 10%, North Carolina 9% |
A few regional quirks worth knowing if you run a lounge or a shop:
- Michigan smokes differently from everyone. MUSTHAVE outsells Tangiers three to one there, and Darkside and Element, two more Russian brands, are third and fourth. Metro Detroit has one of the oldest hookah scenes in the country, and it has clearly moved on from the American dark leaf.
- South Carolina is the last classic state. Al Fakher, the blonde-leaf standard from the Emirates that most of the world learned hookah on, is 54% of units there. Nowhere else is it above 16%.
- Georgia is Eternal Smoke's home turf. 21% of Atlanta-area units, its highest share anywhere.
- Arizona buys foil like it is going out of style. 320 Hookah pre-cut foil is 23% of Arizona units; the national figure is under 2%, and foil is a rounding error in most states next to the hookah accessories people actually reorder (grommets, mouth tips, hoses). Phoenix lounges, we assume, go through a lot of bowls.
- Hardware is a one-time purchase; tobacco is forever. Mya and Regal, our two biggest hookah brands, are under 1% of units combined, and most of the Regal units are grommets and ball bearings, not pipes. Bowls from Apple on Top, Alpaca and HJ are smaller still. People buy one hookah and then feed it for years, which is why 93% of everything in this report is tobacco and coals.
- Outside the US, it is all Tangiers. Orders came from 25 countries, and customers in Germany, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland and Qatar bought almost nothing else.
For what separates these brands in the bowl (leaf, cut, wash, heat tolerance), the brand section of our hookah shisha guide goes through them one at a time.
The 2026 shift: Russia arrives
The single clearest trend in the data is MUSTHAVE. In January 2026 it was 5% of the month's units. By September and October it was 25%, and Tangiers had slipped from 63% to 44% of the month. Darkside roughly doubled over the same stretch. Nothing else moved like that.
Our read: MUSTHAVE is the first Russian brand to make the jump from "the thing enthusiasts import" to "the thing lounges stock", and it did it on flavor names American smokers can actually say (Pinkman, Frosty, Cookie, Orange Team), a medium-strength leaf that is forgiving in a phunnel, and prices under Tangiers. If 2026 is any guide, 2027 is the year the Russian brands become a quarter of the US market.
When America smokes
Hookah is a patio-season product. Orders bottomed out in January and climbed almost every month after that to a peak in October, 64% above the January low. August through October ran 48% above November through January. The pattern holds in every big state, which tells us this is weather and daylight, not promotions. Plan your coal stock accordingly.
| Month | Order index (Jan = 100) | Month | Order index (Jan = 100) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov 2025 | 109 | May 2026 | 137 |
| Dec 2025 | 108 | Jun 2026 | 129 |
| Jan 2026 | 100 | Jul 2026 | 140 |
| Feb 2026 | 110 | Aug 2026 | 155 |
| Mar 2026 | 128 | Sep 2026 | 150 |
| Apr 2026 | 125 | Oct 2026 | 164 |
The coal verdict
Eight hookah coal products made our top 160, and all eight are natural coconut: Coco Nara flats (170 boxes), Le Orange cubes (154), Titanium flats (148) and cubes (108), Superior Coco (104), Cocourth flats (81) and XXX cubes (70), and Black Coco's (70). Not one quick-light product appears. Whatever the gas-station starter kits say, the people who smoke regularly have decided. If you are still on quick-lights and wondering why the bowl tastes off, our coconut coals vs. quick-light coals comparison explains the difference, our coal rankings pick the box, and so does the data above.
How we counted
We exported every paid order from hookahvault.com dated November 1, 2025 through November 2, 2026 (several thousand orders and roughly 21,700 units; the two November 2026 days are excluded from monthly figures). For each order we kept only the month, the shipping state or country, the product title, the brand and the quantity. No names, addresses, emails or order values were used, and nothing in this report can be traced to a person. "Units" are line-item quantities: tins, boxes, packs. Per-capita figures divide orders by approximate 2024 Census Bureau population estimates and are shown as an index with the national rate set to 100; monthly figures are indexed to January 2026. We do not publish raw order counts, but can share sample sizes with journalists and researchers on request. Brand shares by state exclude brand-state pairs with fewer than three units. Flavor families were assigned by keyword from product titles and are approximate.
This is the purchasing behavior of one retailer's customers over one year. We ship nationally, but we are one shop, and our mix leans toward enthusiasts who buy dark-leaf tobacco in bulk. Treat the rankings as a strong signal, not a census.
